Episode 72 Say It Anyway

On family, hard truths, and Steak Diane

If you’ve ever found yourself rehearsing what you want to say to someone you love — then not saying it — this one’s for you. Subscribe below so you never miss a story, a laugh, or a recipe that brings everyone back to the table.

This week, we invited Big Fish René — our mom — to join us for what we thought would be a practical chat about the Sandwich Generation: that stage where you’re starting to care for your parents while still juggling kids, work, and everything else life throws at you.

But like most good conversations, it didn’t stick to the plan.

Instead, it became about something bigger — how to have the hard talks with the people we love most. How to navigate independence and pride, care and control, truth and tenderness. How to say what needs to be said, even when your voice shakes.

Because the truth is, caring for someone — really caring — often means learning when to speak up and when to shut up.

When Love Sounds Like a Lecture

René talked honestly about wanting to stay independent and how hard it can be when your kids start worrying “for your own good.” And we (her kids) admitted we don’t always get the tone right — that our “help” sometimes sounds like criticism.

It’s messy. It’s human. It’s love, disguised as frustration.

But we kept circling back to the same realization: you can’t protect the people you love by staying quiet. You have to say it anyway. Even if it’s uncomfortable. Even if it doesn’t land perfectly.

The Lighter Side of Life (and Travis Kelce)

Of course, because we’re the Fishes, it wasn’t all deep talk. Lynne and Little Fish Sarah shared their background acting debut on 9-1-1 Nashville — assuming, of course, they don’t end up on the cutting room floor. (We’ll all be streaming the premiere this week to find out.)

There was also an unexpected detour into Taylor Swift’s new song “Wood,” and yes, somehow, that led us to a conversation about Travis Kelce’s penis. We are who we are.

And in true Three Lil Fishes fashion, we toasted Kathy’s birthday with laughter, gratitude, and a little side of chaos.

What’s For Dinner: Steak Diane

This week’s “What’s For Dinner” segment features one of René’s old favorites: Steak Diane. It’s classic, a little fancy, and the kind of meal that invites conversation. Because food — like family — is meant to be shared, even when things get complicated.

The Last Word

Sometimes love looks like listening. Sometimes it looks like apologizing. And sometimes, it looks like saying the thing you’ve been holding back — because connection depends on truth, even when it’s uncomfortable.

So this week, we’re taking our own advice. We’re speaking up. We’re leaning in.We’re saying it anyway. Three Lil Fishes. New episodes every Thursday.
