Episode 69: Cosmo, Concerts & Connection

Why making and keeping friends matters at every stage of life

This week’s episode is all about connection—how we make it, how we keep it, and what happens when it slips away.

The College ConundrumKathy opened up about her son navigating the tricky world of college friendships, where apps and algorithms promise connection but don’t always deliver the real thing. It’s a reminder that making friends isn’t just a middle school or college problem—it’s a lifelong pursuit, and sometimes we all need a little help.

When the House Won’t Cooperate

Meanwhile, Lynne’s week has been dominated by house drama (the kind of never-ending repairs that make you wonder if you should just move). But in the middle of the chaos, she found herself reconnecting with old friends, a timely reminder that sometimes the best support system is the one you already have.

Red Carpets and Magazine Advice

Nancy, on the other hand, has been living in the fast lane—balancing concerts, the Disney Emmy After Party, and a brush with Hacks star Julianne Nicholson. She even found herself laughing over old-school Cosmopolitan magazine tips, which sparked a conversation about how cultural advice around relationships has shifted—and how much of it hasn’t.

Why It Matters

Through it all, one truth shines through: connection sustains us. Whether it’s in the form of lifelong friends, new apps, family ties, or a laugh shared over questionable magazine advice, these relationships are the glue that keeps life from unraveling.

What’s for Dinner

This week Lynne shares a recipe from Bill's Sydney Food by Bill Granger. This is a FANTASTIC recipe to pull out for lunch

when you have leftovers from a fancy steakhouse.

FINE STEAK SANDWICH WITH GARLIC CRÈME

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 cup finely sliced onion

  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

  • sea salt

  • freshly ground black pepper

  • 4 thin slices of filet steak

  • garlic crème (below)

  • 1 bunch arugula, washed and dried

  • 4 ripe tomatoes, sliced

  • 4 Ciabatta rolls, Sourdough or French Rolls

DIRECTIONS

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat, add the onion and cook for 10 minutes, stirring frequently, until golden. Add vinegar, salt and pepper and cook for a minute longer until caramelised. Remove onion from the pan and set aside.

  2. Using the same pan, heat the remaining olive oil over high heat. Add steak to the pan and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook for 1 minute, turn and cook the other side for a further minute.

  3. Spread the bread with garlic crème. Place rocket on 4 of the slices and top with tomatoes. Place onions on top of tomato, followed by steak. Top with a second slice of bread. Serves 4.

GARLIC CRÈME

  • 2 egg yolks

  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed

  • sea salt

  • freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 cup (8 fl oz) canola, or other mild oil

DIRECTIONS

Place egg yolks, vinegar, garlic, salt and pepper in a bowl (or in a food processor) and whisk until combined. Add the oil drop by drop, whisking constantly. When the sauce starts to thicken, add the oil in a steady stream until the oil is fully incorporated. If the crème is too thick, thin with a tablespoon of warm water.
