Episode 64: Tick Checks, Summer Fun & Crispy Chicken Salad

It’s officially summer in Lil Fishland, and that means outdoor adventures, slightly unhinged vet bills, and salads that won’t weigh you down. In this week’s episode of Three Lil Fishes, the sisters are talking sunshine, skin protection, and why it’s apparently very expensive to own a young black lab.

🐶 Millie’s Back… and So Is the Vet Bill

Kathy’s pup Millie returned from training — and promptly needed her annual exam. Sounds simple, right? Enter: the world of “puppy vs. adult” vaccine pricing and the fine print of pet insurance that doesn’t cover a perfectly healthy dog. Lesson of the week? Pet ownership is joyful, but it sure ain’t cheap. Especially when you're trying to cross the Canadian border with an immunized lab in tow.

🕷️ Tick Talk You’ll Actually Want to Hear

If you're spending any time outside this summer (and we hope you are!), tick prevention is a must. Nancy shares some honestly helpful info on tick safety for both pets and people — including symptoms of Lyme disease, best prevention tips, and how you can mail your tick in for testing. Yep, that’s a thing. And yes, the sisters have jokes about it.

Pro tip: Do the tick check. It's real, it’s necessary… and it might just become your next family catchphrase. PA Tick Research Lab

☀️ Summer Fun, City by City

The sisters each dish on what summer looks like in their parts of the country:

  • Nashville: Live music, hiking at Percy Warner Park, and free line dancing at Luke Combs' bar. Yes, really.

  • Philadelphia: Graduation party overload, backyard bocce, and daydreaming about hula hooping.

  • Los Angeles: Beach days, jazz nights at LACMA, and dinner under the string lights on a patio.

Whether you're a planner (Minnesota bucket lists!) or a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-sundress type, the vibe is clear: get outside, soak it in, and make it fun.

📺 What We're Watching

Mixed reviews this week on TV picks:

  • Linda loved the Netflix series Sirens (mystery + strong female cast + Kevin Bacon).

  • Nancy wasn’t impressed with Four Seasons — Tina Fey’s series that left her more depressed than entertained.

  • Kathy recommends Your Friends and Neighbors with Jon Hamm for anyone into high-functioning hot messes.

We don’t always agree — and that’s what makes the recommendations spicy.

🥗 What’s for Dinner: Crispy Chicken Salad

This week’s recipe is a crunchy, sweet, and savory crispy chicken salad with cabbage, sesame seeds, almonds, and the world’s most addictive dressing. It’s light, it’s summer-y, and it’s the perfect patio meal.

📌 Tip from Kathy: Do. Not. Burn. The seeds. (Toasting them takes only a minute — don’t walk away!)

Pair it with a cold rosé or a vodka lemonade slushie, and you’ve got the ultimate summer dinner party in a bowl. Crispy Nutty Chicken Salad Serves 6
