3LFPOD 96: Squeeze, Stream & Shingles: What We're Watching, Why Mammograms Are the Worst, and the TV Business Explained

Hey Fishes!

Episode 96 is live, and honestly? This one covers a LOT of ground. Grab your coffee and settle in, because we went from binge-watching recommendations to breast health to the economics of television — and we wouldn't have it any other way.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING We kicked things off with our current TV obsessions, and there is a lot to talk about. Kathy has been watching The Madison — a Taylor Sheridan show starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell — and she is pleasantly surprised.

Nancy is hooked on Big Mistakes, the new Dan Levy series that has her laughing out loud (the premise involves a pastor's family accidentally getting tangled up with the mob — yes, really). Lynne saw Hail Mary in theaters with Ryan Gosling and came back genuinely impressed, calling it a nod to classic filmmaking with real, old-school acting at its core. We also touched on Shrinking, Hacks (final season, people!), and High Potential.

Oh, and we watched the Masters. Rory McIlroy's win had us cheering — and Sergio Garcia's tee box tantrum had us cringing. We had thoughts. Many thoughts.

Why Is Streaming Such a Mess? We Asked an Expert.

Mid-episode, Nancy brought in a special guest: her husband Tim, a 28-year television veteran and Emmy Award winner. Because honestly, we were all frustrated — why are we paying for streaming subscriptions AND sitting through commercials?

Tim broke it all down in a way that actually made sense. The short version: the monthly fees we pay don't come close to covering the cost of producing the content we love. The old model — where advertisers funded TV — actually worked. Now we're in a strange in-between era where streaming services are trying to figure out how to stay afloat, and we (the viewers) are caught in the middle. It was a genuinely eye-opening conversation that made us feel a little differently about those commercial breaks — and a lot more sympathetic to the writers, directors, and editors whose livelihoods depend on this industry finding its footing.

LET'S JUMP IN: HEALTH ETC, ETC, ETC

Health Talk: Mammograms & the Shingles Vaccine

Nancy had a mammogram last week and she is not going to sugarcoat it — it was uncomfortable, borderline barbaric, and she had serious questions about why we haven't come up with something better in the year of our Lord 2025. (We feel you, Nancy.) Lynne mentioned that non-compression 3D imaging technology does exist, it's just not widely available yet. We talked about why we'd love to see ultrasounds become more standard.

But here's the thing: uncomfortable as it is, mammograms save lives. Kathy shared some sobering statistics — 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer, and it's the most common cancer in women. Early detection is truly the difference between outcomes. The Charlie's Angels ladies — who all battled breast cancer — said it best: get in there and get screened. And Kathy's personal reward system of treating herself to a hot chocolate after? Honestly, we support it completely.

We also talked shingles — specifically the vaccine and why everyone over 50 should be getting it. (Yes, that means you.) Kathy broke down why the chickenpox virus never truly leaves your body, how shingles can come roaring back under stress, and why the vaccine — though it packs a punch in the arm — is absolutely worth it. 1 in 3 people will develop shingles in their lifetime, and the complications can be long-lasting and painful. Don't skip this one.

We wrapped things up with this week's recipe, and it's a good one. Blanket Dumplings straight from Lynne's Instagram feed.

What's For Dinner:

Blanket Dumplings

Straight deliciousness from Lynne's Instagram feed.

1 pound of ground meat – this can be pork, chicken, or turkey

1 tbs of sesame oil

1 tbs of soy sauce

1 tbs mirin

1tsp minced garlic

½ tsp of ginger

1 shredded carrot

1 to 2 green onions diced

Mix well. Form 1 inch in diameter balls

Heat skillet on medium heat with sesame oil or avocado oil. Put balls of meat in pan with enough room for wonton wrapper to be placed on the top of meat. Heat the balls for a min or two then place a wrapper on each ball of meat and pinch over the top of the ball. Put enough water in the pan to cover the bottom. Put a top on the pan and cook for 7-10min. You know they are done when the wrapper becomes clear and the bottom of the “dumpling” is crispy. Top with a mixture of half soy sauce and crunch garlic chili sauce. Top with more diced green onions.
