3LFPOD 87: Magic Castles, Olympic Crashes & Heart-Shaped Pizza

This week we cover a lot of ground.

We start with magic (actual magic—Nancy took her daughter to The Magic Castle in Hollywood and now wants to go back for the swanky adults-only version).

Then we detour into Olympic obsession—curling strategy, ski crashes, torn ACLs, broken wrists, and the kind of grit that makes you question your own tolerance for discomfort.

We debate whether pushing through pain is admirable… or just plain nuts.

We break down Super Bowl ads, laugh at Dunkin’, tear up at Lay’s, and admit that sometimes the commercials are better than the game.

And then we get to it.

Valentine’s Day.

Are you in the “I love it” camp?Or the “please don’t make me spend $200 on a mediocre dinner” camp?

We talk about loving your spouse, loving your kids (even the ones who don’t want the chocolate you send), loving your friends, loving your dog… and maybe even loving yourself.

There are heart-shaped pancakes. There are tulips sent to far-away daughters. There are adult sons who would prefer a gift card to protein over cookies and cream. There’s a quiet beach walk with a dog and no expectations. And yes, there’s butterscotch pudding.

Because sometimes love looks like effort.Sometimes it looks like restraint. And sometimes it looks like standing in your kitchen thinking, “I make three meals a day already—how is this special?”

If you’ve ever felt torn between doing something meaningful and not wanting to buy into the hype, this one’s for you.

What's For Dinner Dessert:

Decadent, Delicious & Divisive Butterscotch Pudding

Maybe you're like Kathy & Lynne, not really pudding people. Well, Nancy didn't think she was either until she made this for her pudding person (Producer Tim who is proudly pro-puddin').

It's decadent, delicious and for all kinds of peole...pudding or otherwise.

INGREDIENTS

6 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar

1 teaspoon molasses (optional but recommended)

2 cups heavy cream, (1 1/4 cups warmed, 3/4 C for whipping)

3 tablespoons cornstarch

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

2 cups whole milk

3 large egg yolks

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1/2 tablespoon bourbon

1/2 tablespoon apple-cider vinegar

1/2 cup Skor bar candy, cut and crushed into tiny pieces

DIRECTIONS

Step 1- Build the base

In a heavy saucepan, cook the butter over medium heat until it foams and turns golden brown with a nutty aroma. Don’t walk away.

Add the brown sugar (and molasses, if using). Cook over low heat, stirring, until dissolved and bubbling, about 2–3 minutes.

Slowly whisk in the warmed 1 1/4 cups heavy cream. It may sputter slightly; keep whisking until smooth.

Step 2 - Thicken and enrich

In a bowl, whisk cornstarch, salt, and 1/2 cup milk until smooth.

Add to the saucepan along with remaining 1 1/2 cups milk. Cook over moderate heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and just beginning to bubble.

In a separate bowl, lightly whisk the egg yolks. Slowly ladle about 1/2 cup of the hot pudding into the yolks while whisking (tempering). Then return the yolk mixture to the saucepan.

Cook, stirring constantly, until it reaches a gentle boil and thickens further, about 1 minute. Remove from heat.

Whisk in vanilla, bourbon, and vinegar.

Strain through a fine sieve into a bowl. Stir in 1/4 cup of the toffee pieces.

Pour into six 6–8 oz glasses. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface (to prevent a skin from forming). Chill at least 3 hours or overnight.

Step 3 - Finish

In a chilled bowl, whip the remaining 3/4 cup of heavy cream with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla until soft peaks form. Garnish the puddings with the whipped cream and toffee pieces and serve.

Fishes Out...

At its core, this episode isn’t really about Valentine’s Day. It’s about grit. It’s about showing up. It’s about loving people in the ways they can actually receive it—even when that means skipping the chocolate. It’s about the small rituals that anchor a family, and the quiet moments where you decide you matter too. In the middle of noise, pressure, and expectations, sometimes love is just choosing to be present.

See you at the table,
